The difference between a house and a home is the environment. Scent is an excellent way to quickly create a cozy, welcoming, and relaxing environment. While there are many artificial air fresheners and scented store-bought goods available, they often contain many harsh chemicals that can be harmful after constant exposure.
Luckily, there are many ways to use fresh, natural resources to scent your home. Here are just four of them for you try.
Olive oil candles
Replace your off the shelf candles with these olive oil creations! You can make them using a number of items found in many kitchens – such as glass jars, wire, paper clips, and, of course, olive oil. All you will need to purchase is a specialist wick (but if you’re crafty like us, you’ll probably have some of that anyway!). Use the wire or clip to hold the wick in place in the center of the jar and pour your oil in! Add your favorite essential oil to give it a fragrant kick.
Again, banish your store-bought potpourri in favor of a wholesome, homemade creation! Thinly slice fresh ingredients such as apples and oranges and bake them in the oven until they are crisp. Once done, add the fruit and your favorite spices such as cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, fennel, mint, thyme and more to a bowl. Toss them together, transferring the scent evenly.
Essential oil reed diffusers
Reed diffusers have become a popular home fragrance product, but the oil inside them can contain many harmful chemicals. Make them at home by finding a glass jar (ones with smaller openings work best), or purchase some beautiful ones at a thrift store. Then, create your scent by adding a strong smelling essential oil to a good quality carrier oil such as almond or safflower oil. Pour the oil into your jars, then add your reeds and enjoy! Rattan sticks work best, allowing the oil to travel up them and disperse the fragrance into the atmosphere. You can order these online.
Use your home’s resources!
Many natural products you use for other areas in the home may also double up as a great tool for room fragrance. For example, our organic bar soaps are bursting with herbs, essential oils and plant extracts. If you like to stock up on our best natural bar soaps, store them out in the open rather than away in the cupboard to unleash the fragrance around the room!
