Creating a welcoming environment in your home comes down to several things – such as the color scheme you decide on for your interior décor, the furniture you choose, the artwork you hang on the walls and of course, the scent you use to fragrance your home.
While it’s easy to add an artificial air freshener to your cart the next time you run to the store, many contain chemicals and other unnatural additives which can be harmful to the environment. Rather than fill your home with artificial fragrance, why not try our four tips to naturally scent your space?
Make your own candles
This is a great craft project whatever the time of year and not as hard as you might think! If you’ve never tried making your own candles before, why not give it a go? As you get more experienced, you can experiment with combinations of different scents to create your own signature blend. You can use olive oil as the base for your candle.
If you don’t have any old candle jars lying around the house, use any clean glass jar (such as one that your nut butter or jelly comes in). You’ll need a piece of wire or a paperclip and a wick – use the clip to hold the wick in place in the center of the jar, pour in the olive oil and then a drop or two of your favorite essential oil.
Whip up a batch of homemade potpourri
There’s something really satisfying about making your own version of something that you’d usually buy – so why not put the store-bought stuff back and make your own potpourri next time yours needs a refresh? This takes a little bit of time to make but you can simmer the ingredients on the stovetop all day, which will make your house smell amazing before you’ve even decanted your creation!
This is a really simply way to naturally fragrance your home and you can mix up any number of different ingredients to create a beautiful scent. To get started, gather a few fresh fruits such as oranges, cranberries or apples. Slice the oranges and apples. Now, select a few spices such as cinnamon, ginger, cloves or star anise. Throw everything in a pot, add water and simmer.
Display your natural soaps
If you have any of our natural organic handmade bar soaps at home, take them out of the vanity and sit them on the counter top. The natural herbs, essential oils and plant extracts we use will give off a subtle scent and gently fragrance your home. You can also drop an unused bar into your drawer to add a hint of fragrance to your clothes or linens.
Make your own reed diffusers with natural essential oils
Reed diffusers are a great way to subtly scent a room but, they can be expensive to buy and the oil often contains chemicals. It’s very easy to make your own – simply collect together your favorite natural essential oils (we love lavender) and pull a carrier oil such as almond oil out of your store cupboard. Add a few drops of essential oils, mix and then decant into a glass jar. Add the reeds and then display in the room of your choice.
